Renovation of the room where the County Board and the Madison Common Council meet began last week and work will continue throughout the summer.  The Common Council will meet in room 260 of the Madison Municipal Building on July 17th and August 7th.  The County Board will meet on July 12th at the Alliant Energy Center and on August 16th at the Lussier Family Heritage Center at Lake Farm Park.

The primary reason for the renovation is to better accommodate the public, particularly by meeting the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.  The room is being remodeled to make both the dais and the gallery seating for the public wheelchair accessible. In addition, the audio and video broadcasting systems will be improved.

“The renovation of the chambers is long overdue,” said County Board Chair Scott McDonell.  “It is important that the local seat of government set an example of inclusiveness.  I’m pleased we are able to improve the room for the public,” he added.

The remodeling addresses the sustainability and local purchasing goals of the city and county.  It features the work of Dane County and state-based firms:  Carley Wood Associates of Madison is designing and building the dais; Miron Construction is a Wisconsin-based firm serving as the general contractor; and Professional Audio Designs of Wauwatosa is providing upgrades to the sound system.  Rather than purchase new seating for the gallery, the old seats are being refurbished. Finally, the new window shades will improve the energy efficiency of the room.

The renovation is scheduled to be completed by the end of August and meetings should resume in room 201 of the City County Building in September.  If you would like to see the construction in progress, please contact the County Board Office at 266-5758.
