Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk will be on hand, and hold a press conference, this Saturday, July 28, at 10:30 a.m. to celebrate the Grand Opening of the new South Madison Farmers' Market. The new market, located in the parking lot of the Villager Mall in the 2200 block of South Park Street, opened for business in mid-June.
Special events planned for the day include music, health screening, tips and recipes for healthy eating, cooking demonstrations, and a variety of fun activities for kids like face painting and storytelling.
"Dane County has a long tradition of supporting farmers," said Falk. "I'm looking forward to thanking the many folks who worked so hard to make the market a reality."
Over the past month, over 20 vendors from the Dane County area have been trucking in supplies of fresh produce every Tuesday afternoon and Saturday morning. The market has transformed the parking lot into a veritable garden, with the vendors' umbrellas and tents creating a haven from the summer heat.
The market is also fast gaining a reputation for being friendly, with vendors and volunteers gladly assisting customers who need help getting loads of produce to their cars.
The market represents the efforts of numerous individuals and organizations. Dane County provided funding for the coordinator position, and the Madison South Rotary Club and St. Mary's Hospital contributed funds for the grand opening and marketing.
The South Madison Farmers' Market is held Tuesday afternoons from 2:30 to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday mornings from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. through the end of October. Interested vendors are encouraged to contact market coordinator Cheryl Wade (608-261-5088) for more information.
