Madison –Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz and Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk request nominations for the annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award.  Both the City and the County have long histories of honoring deserving individuals as they demonstrate leadership and commitment to promoting peace, understanding and communication between diverse populations.

This year, in a newly formed joint City of Madison and Dane County Commission, the effort to select worthy nominees will be combined.  Two Humanitarian Awards will be presented: Young Leaders (ages 13-19) and Humanitarians (ages 20 and above). The nomination deadline is December 21, 2009 by 4:30 pm.

“Past, current and future recipients of these distinguished awards are promoters of peace who offer our community so much,” County Executive Kathleen Falk said.  “These awards are a tribute to those around us who through their words and actions, follow in the footsteps of Dr. King.”

Nominees should have demonstrated leadership while making significant contributions to increasing communication and peace among our communities.  Nomination application and criteria is attached.  You may also access online applications and nominee criteria at: as well as at:

“Our community’s commitment to social justice and activism is well-represented by recipients of this award,” Mayor Dave Cieslewicz. “I encourage all of us to recognize those who have shown a deep commitment to making our community a better place.”

The City and County will present the awards at the 24th Annual City-County Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance on Monday, January 18th, at the Overture Center Capital Theater, 201 State Street, Madison.  The program begins at 6:00 p.m.
