County Board to Honor Longtime Community Leader

The Dane County Bookmobile, a mini-library on wheels that makes weekly visits to communities located throughout Dane County, will be known as the Dode Lowe Bookmobile, under a resolution expected to be approved by the Dane County Board of Supervisors tomorrow night.

Lowe, who represented the East Side of Madison on the County Board for 10 years and served 12 years on the Library Board, was also a champion of the labor movement and a sought-after political strategist. He died in October 2014 at the age of 76.

"Dode was a true champion of literacy and education, who knew that a strong democracy can only thrive with an educated electorate," said Supervisor Jeff Pertl, who represents the district where Lowe lived and who sponsored the resolution to rename the bookmobile in Lowe’s honor. "This is a fitting tribute to a man who loved libraries, loved books, and loved bringing them to the people.”

“Dode was an unwavering public servant, an inspirational leader and a friend,” said Dane County Executive Joe Parisi. “Naming the bookmobile in his honor will remind our community for years to come of Dode’s commitment to all who call our community home.”

The resolution comes before the full board at its regular meeting tomorrow night. If approved, the name change will take place immediately and the new bookmobile will bear the name when it comes into service.
