As part of the "September 11th National Day of Service", the ReadyWisconsin AmeriCorps program is partnering with Dane County Emergency Management to assemble Disaster Preparedness Kits for seniors. The kits are "starter kits" that include the basics of a flashlight, emergency blanket, first aid kit and general emergency preparedness information.
The Emergency Preparedness Kits will be assembled on Thursday September 11 in the lobby of the City County Building (210 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Madison, WI 53703) from 9:00am - 11:00am. Seniors are invited to come and pick up a kit for themselves and learn how they can be more personally prepared for emergencies.
Dane County Emergency Management will be delivering these kits to senior centers across Dane County. When seniors receive these kits, they will be encouraged to add their own personal items to the kits including a list of doctors, personal medications, and associated dosage or treatment information.
The Disaster Preparedness Kits are a segue to getting seniors more invested in their personal safety. Personal support networks are critical for senior's safety in emergencies. County Executive Joe Parisi said "Critical to senior's personal preparedness are strong connections with their neighbors and personal service providers. Delivering these Emergency Preparedness Kits is designed to augment senior's personal preparedness by providing some basic components of an emergency kit as well as educating them how they can move forward along their own emergency preparedness continuum." County Executive Parisi will be assembling kits at 10:00am
This event is all part of a larger effort by ReadyWisconsin AmeriCorps to build citizen's preparedness.Over the next year, an AmeriCorps member will be working out of Dane County Emergency Management's office providing preparedness outreach to individuals, organizations, and local governments.
