Dane County Set to Hire Second Medical Examiner to Meet Rising Caseloads, Continue Development of Regional Service

Dane County is set to hire its first Deputy Medical Examiner to help with increasing death investigation and autopsy caseloads, County Executive Joe Parisi announced today.
Parisi announced that Dr. Kristin Roman, Chief Deputy Medical Examiner for New York City, has accepted the position and will begin her full-time work here later this summer.
“We are excited to bring Dr. Roman’s many years of experience to Dane County to build upon the professional excellence of our Medical Examiner’s Office,” County Executive Joe Parisi said. “Because of the innovation of our Medical Examiner’s Office and the expertise they offer both to Dane County and the region, we are able to improve services to families and law enforcement with revenues generated from pathology work our office does for many areas.”
Dane County converted to a professional Medical Examiner’s Office in 2012 and since then has done death investigation and autopsy work for a number of Wisconsin counties, providing a regional network for the specialty work of forensic pathology. The office, led by Dr. Vincent Tranchida, conducted nearly 1300 death investigations last year – nearly 200 more than just two years earlier.
“Dane County is very fortunate to hire a second highly qualified forensic pathologist with a great deal of experience. It’s great that Dr. Roman is coming soon so she can participate in designing our new medical examiner facility located near the interstate,” said Supervisor Paul Rusk, Chair of the Public Protection and Judiciary Committee. “With the nationwide shortage of forensic pathologists, Drs. Tranchida and Roman will provide a regional resource for prosecutors and law enforcement officials throughout the Dane County area.”
Roman has worked for the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office since 2004 and has been Deputy Chief Medical Examiner since 2006. She did her pathology residency at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. Among her specialties, Roman is a certified Hazardous Materials technician.

Beyond this, she is dedicated, hard-working, and cares greatly for the families she serves."
Pending confirmation by the Dane County Board of Supervisors, Roman’s first day will be September 9th and her starting salary will be $178,000.
