Madison –Madison Mayor Paul Soglin and Dane County Executive Joe Parisi request nominations for the annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award. Both the City and the County have long histories of over 25 years of honoring deserving individuals who demonstrate leadership and commitment to promoting peace, understanding and communication between diverse populations.
“An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity” said Dr. King. Each of the Humanitarian Award winners will follow that model. Two Humanitarian Awards will be presented: one for Young Leaders (ages 13-19) and one for Humanitarians (ages 20 and above).The nomination deadline is December 9, 2011 by 4:30 pm.
“As 2011 comes to a close, it is critical to recognize our residents for their acts of courage and humanity.” said County Executive Joe Parisi. “I encourage all to take the time to nominate those they know who have led the way to peace and community among our residents..”
Nominees should have demonstrated leadership while making significant contributions to increasing communication and peace among our communities. Nomination application and criteria is attached. “As Dr. King reminded us, ‘Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve.’ Our community is enriched by people compelled to serve, to promote and work for equality and social justice.” Mayor Paul Soglin stated. “We can honor Dr. King by honoring those around us who seek to advance his message and his dream.”
The City and County will present the awards at the 26th Annual City-County Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance on Monday, January 16th, at the Overture Center Capital Theater, 201 State Street, Madison. The program begins at 6:00 p.m.
