County’s Free E-Waste Recycling Event Set for June 25th

Annual Event Great Opportunity to Safely Dispose of Unwanted Electronics

 

For the third year in a row, Dane County will hold a free e-waste collection event at the Alliant Energy Center, allowing area residents to drop off unwanted TVs, computers, and other electronics for recycling.  This year’s event will take place on June 25th.  Past events, believed to be the largest in North America, have helped prevent an estimated 1.3 million pounds of electronics from going into area landfills

 

“This event is a great opportunity for all of us to clean out our basements or closets and dispose of our electronics in a free  and environmentally friendly way,” said Dane County Executive Joe Parisi.  “The Solid Waste Division and the Alliant Energy Center staff have done a great job of making the drop off process quick and easy.”

 

The Dane County e-waste recycling event will be Saturday, June 25th, 2010 from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.  The drop-area will be in the back parking lot of the Alliant Energy Center.  All vehicles must enter either the main entrance off Rimrock Road or the entrance off Olin Avenue.  Electronics that will be collected during the event are: television sets of all sizes, personal computers (including keyboards and mice) and computer monitors, printers, scanners, fax machines, calculators, cell phones, radios, stereos, telephones, DVD and CD players, and VCRs.

 

The county’s recycling event has always been well attended, and volunteers will be needed once again to help ensure everything runs smoothly.  Parisi noted that he will be on site for part of the day to help collect electronics at the drop-off, and encouraged others to volunteer as well. 

 

Volunteers are needed for half or full-day shifts between 7am and 3pm.  Those interested in helping unload cars and/or direct traffic at the drop-off site should contact Jan Neitzel-Knox at Dane County Public Works at 266-4029 or by e-mail at: neitzelknox@co.dane.wi.us.

 

The free electronics drop off day is made possible through the county’s partnership with Veolia Environmental Services. Veolia is partnering with electronics manufacturers to cover all the costs of this collection.
