Snowmobiler Fatally Injured in Crash

Madison, WI: Thursday, December 25th, 2008 – At 4:09 p.m. Deputies from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office along with Deforest EMS and UW Med-Flight, responded to a crash involving a snowmobile and a milk truck on County Highway V, east of Martha Lane in the Town of Windsor. A 44 year old male from the Town of Windsor was operating a snowmobile traveling northbound on a designated trail when he failed to stop before reaching County Highway V. The snowmobile proceeded onto road and into the path of the milk truck traveling eastbound on County Highway V. The milk truck struck the snowmobiler and he was pronounced by a Med Flight Doctor. The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of family. Two other accidents happened in Dane County throughout the evening involving snowmobiles. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind citizens of the following safety precautions while operating a snowmobile : Ø Always ride at a safe and responsible speed. There is a 55 mph speed limit during the hours of darkness ( ½ hour after sunset to ½ hour before sunrise). Ø Do not use alcohol or other drugs when you ride. The prohibited blood alcohol concentration in Wisconsin is .08 or greater. Ø Always maintain a safe distance between riders. Ø Always wear a helmet, eye protection, and other protective clothing. Ø Stay on trails designated for snowmobiles and please obey the laws.
