Sheriff's Deputies Intervene on a Suicide Attempt in the Jail

Madison, WI: September 26th, 2008 - At approximately 6:25 pm this evening, Dane County Sheriff's Deputies responded to an inmate of the Dane County Jail - City/County Building attempting to commit suicide.
The 40-year-old male inmate from Madison attempted to hang himself while in his cell with a jail-issued bed sheet. Another inmate from the cellblock alerted the deputies to the situation. The deputies immediately responded and were able to quickly free the man from the ligature he had constructed. At the time of the rescue the man was conscious and alert.
The inmate is being held in the Dane County Jail on a probation hold. At the time of the suicide attempt, the inmate was housed in a four-person Administrative Confinement cellblock of the City County Building. Following the attempt, Madison Fire Rescue transported him to UW Hospital for evaluation. Upon his return to the Dane County Jail, the inmate was evaluated by the Mental Health staff and is currently housed in segregation under suicide watch.
