McLellan, Dept. of Emergency Management 608/267-2542 Application Deadline Reference #082608-01 Available at: www.co.dane.wi.us Disaster Assistance Application Deadline Federal disaster assistance applications may be made by homeowners and renters (who suffered damages to their homes and personal property) and businesses and non-profit organizations (to cover losses to real estate, property, and economic injury) from storms and flooding between June 5 and July 25, 2008. The application deadline is Monday, September 15, 2008! “While the floodwaters of earlier this summer have receded for most, the damages left behind are still very evident. I hope those affected who haven’t filed for federal assistance will take advantage of this extra window of opportunity,” County Executive Kathleen Falk said. The application process begins with an application to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Applications may be made either 1) Over the internet, at http://www.fema.gov/assistance, 2) By telephone at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), or 3) TTY 1-800-462-7585 for people with speech or hearing disabilities. If applicants are directed to complete a U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) application, it must be completed and submitted before any requests for federal assistance (including FEMA applications) will be considered. SBA applications may be completed in written form or electronically online at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela/. Questions about the SBA’s application should be directed to the SBA’s Disaster Customer Service Center at (800) 659-2955. Persons are not required to accept a loan from the SBA if they are approved. If applicants are denied an SBA loan, they may be eligible for further assistance from FEMA. A special community meeting for renters, home owners, and businesses to meet with FEMA Community Relations representatives is being sponsored by the NAACP Madison Branch and Centro Hispano of Dane County. The meeting will take place at Wright Middle School, 1717 Fish Hatchery Rd., TODAY, August 26 from 5:00 – 8:00pm. Anyone is welcome.
