Veterans Service Commission, County Executive Falk, and Madison Mallards to Honor Troops and Veterans

The Dane County Veterans Service Commission, in cooperation with the Madison Mallards baseball organization, have declared Friday, August 1 “Salute the Troops Night” in honor of Dane County’s National Guard members and Reservists who have been called to active duty, and local veterans. The tribute was scheduled at the request of the Commission, which advises Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk on veterans issues and provides oversight over the operations of the County Veterans Services Office. “It is a way for all of us in the community to tell our brave troops that we hold them forever in our minds, and in our hearts,” said Falk. Dr. John Hofer, Commission member and Chief of Dentistry at the Veterans Administration hospital in Madison, organized the effort. He secured the participation of the Mallards through contacts with team owner Steve Schmitt, whose father William served on Tinian Island in the Pacific Ocean during WWII. Hofer commented, “Steve has been very supportive of our efforts to honor our returning troops, and the veterans color guard units that are participating. Tying it in with America’s favorite pastime will make it a great night.” Pre-game activities will include presentation of colors by the veterans organization color guards, brief comments from County Executive Falk and Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz, and the ceremonial first pitch from Captain William Davis, USN (retired). "It's an opportunity to do something for all of Dane County," said Lonnie Cooks, chair of the Veterans Service Commission. “The goal is for citizens to pause for a minute on Friday, August 1, at 6:30 pm in silent reflection to honor our troops now serving on active duty, those who have returned home, and veterans throughout Dane County, especially the National Guard and Reservists members," said Cooks. The game, against the Rochester Honkers, starts at 6:30 p.m. at Madison’s Warner Park. Ticket cost is $3-$6, depending on age and seat location. A sell-out is expected, and the game is also scheduled as “Budweiser Fireworks Night”, with a post-game presentation by Thunder Cat Fireworks. The rain date is August 2. # # #
