At their meeting on Thursday, September 26, the Dane County Environment, Agriculture, and Natural Resources Committee will be meeting on important environmental initiatives meant to raise awareness and improve the lives of County residents.

First on the agenda is a presentation of certificates to youth involved in Dane County’s Youth Environmental Leadership Experience.  The program was new in 2019 and engages high school students throughout the school year in monthly outdoor recreation and stewardship activities.  The program also includes a summer internship including hands-on education and service activities.  Funds for this initiative were included in the County’s 2018 budget.  More information about the program can be found here: https://lwrd.countyofdane.com/Youth-Environmental-Leadership-Experience

“I am pleased we have this program available to the youth of Dane County.” Said Michele Ritt, County Board Supervisor (District 18) and Chair of the committee.  “As we experience a changing climate and environment, it is critical to include youth in education and policy making” Ritt continued.

At the same meeting, the committee will consider a land purchase for Indian Lake County Park and the Ice Age Trail.  The land purchase is slated to cost $168,000 and is an important acquisition as it will provide for expansion of the park and increase opportunities for recreation, aid in resolving some erosion issues, and provide additional access to the south end of the park.

The Friends of Silverwood County Park are also scheduled to provide a presentation to the committee on their accomplishments and activities at this week’s meeting.

The Environment, Agriculture, and Natural Resources committee will meet at 5:30pm in room A/B of the Lymen F Anderson Ag & Conservation Center at 5201 Fen Oak Drive in Madison.
